Worlingworth Cricket Club T20 v Shotley Peninsula 20/20 on Fri 17 Jun 2022 at 18:00
Worlingworth Cricket Club Lost by 6 Wickets
Match report
Worly's T20 squad welcomed the arrival of Shotley and Peninsular Cricket Club for their opening home T20 match of the season. With temperatures above 30 degrees for most of the day, the bar was well stocked and the crowd took their places for what promised to be a 'Fireworks Friday'. After watching the England ODI side score a new World Record score of 498 from 50 overs, the Worly side were upbeat and hoping they could take inspiration from their international idols. Sam tossed up and the Shotley skipper called correctly with Worly being asked to bat on a green surface that promised pace and movement. John and Harry N opened for the hosts, with the former taking a liking to the Shotley opener's full straight length, blasting three quick boundaries. Unfortunately not for the first time this season, Harry N couldn't back up John at the other end, being bowled through the gate and having his middle stump ripped out from the ground. With the cheap dismissal of the opener, the in-form Harry W skipped to the crease to continue the counter-attack as started by John. Taking advantage of balls being bowled into 'the slot' Harry W immediately took it to the Shotley attack blasting back-to-back boundaries on numerous occasions. John was unlucky to drag a ball outside off onto his stumps but the run rate was not to be stopped here as Percy began his innings with some eye-catching stroke play, taking a particular liking to the part-time off-spinner, bludgeoning boundaries back over the bowler's head and through the vacant spot at cover. Harry W brought up his 50 with two glorious fours and left the field to a ripple of applause from the ground, it is worth noting what great sportsmanship the Shotley players showed who congratulated his clever innings of stroke play and sensible shot selection. At the end of the day, that is what friendly cricket matches are all about. With the niceties over, in walked DK at number 5 for his first knock of the 2022 campaign. All eyes were on the experienced middle-order batsmen who did not disappoint bashing and bullying the ball to all corners of the ground. Mixing conventional shots with strokes one would not see out of place in Jos Buttler or Liam Livingstone's handbook, DK brought up a well-deserved 50 on return to his boyhood club consisting of four 6s and four 4s. DK had good support from the lower order, with 15 runs coming from the bats of Alfie, Sam and Dexter. Worly finished with an above-par score of 158 after their 20 overs. The second innings began with Percy and Alfie unlucky to see the ball find the outside edge of the Shotley openers on many occasions but fall short of the waiting slips and gully. The opening Shotley pair made 40 runs before Alfie produced some textbook off-spin bowling removing the Shotley number 1 for 11 runs. It was from here that the Shotley numbers two and three would counter-attack and put on a 100-run partnership, aided by some chances that fell in their favour rather than the hosts. It was at this point skipper Sam turned to his strike bowler, Dexter, to try and wrestle back control for Worly. Decter succeeded in removing the set number four batsmen who was batting well around the other batsmen accumulating steady runs. Fresh off a four-wicket haul from the previous Sunday, Will S then struck again for the hosts twice in the 14th and 16th overs with Shotley still trailing by 18 runs. Luckily for Shotley, their number six and seven steadied the ship bringing the visitors home off the last ball of the 18th over. Worly left the pitch with their heads held high, knowing that they had taken a lot from that game giving valuable boundary-hitting confidence to their batsmen and allowing their bowlers to hone their T20 skills. Worly looks to the future and not dwell on their defeat with games against Halesworth and Saxmundham coming shortly.
