Worlingworth Cricket Club 2nd XI v Eye 30/30 on Sun 12 Jun 2022 at 12.00
Worlingworth Cricket Club Won By 166 Runs

Match report Looking to end their run of three defeats on the bounce, Worly welcomed Eye and District CC to Bedfield on a gloriously sunny, warm afternoon. Head groundsman Bill had produced a belter of a wicket that had a light, even covering of grass atop a rock-hard pitch that promised bounce and carry for the bowlers but consistency and reliability for the batsmen. After returning from a short break up in Yorkshire on the Friday, deputy groundsman Richard had managed to squeeze in enough time to run round the outfield with the mowers leaving the outfield looking more like a carpet than a field of grass. With blue skies above and a hard pitch below, the Worly players were all thinking the same thing after their pitch inspection... BAT FIRST. Like the African Proverb; "Bad luck for one man is good luck for another" skipper Sam capitalised on the incorrect call from the Eye and District captain electing to bat first. Sending openers Bill and Dylan into the fray, it only took the latter four balls to open up his and Worly's account for the day, crunching a wide, over-pitched delivery from the Eye and District opening paceman into the cover boundary for four runs. Dylan's attacking instinct set the tone for the rest of the innings with Bill joining in the stroke-play despatching anything overpitched or wide to the boundary fence. It wouldn't be until the 8th over when Eye finally brought the offensive opening partnership to an end, Bill being undone by a ball that swung in and nibbled away to clip the veteran's off-stump, sending him back to the shed for a well-made 17 runs. With the departure of Bill, Gino strutted to the crease armed with a new stick of willow and feeling in good knick after a 20-ball 68 in a mid-week T20 game. Gino only kept the crowd and scorers quiet for one ball before sending his next three balls to the boundary for a trio of well-struck fours. With Gino set at the other end, Dylan was looking to kick on and out to put the pressure on the Eye fielders, after sending the ball flying to the boundary through backwards point, it took an inspired piece of fielding from the Eye opening bowler off his own bowling to remove Dylan who had helped Worly get off to a flyer in the match. Gino was then joined by John who mixed aggressive shots with well-timed placement, the Worly numbers three and four adding a quick 50-run partnership in under five overs to help Worly reach 95 runs at the halfway stage. Gino was unlucky to be bowled by a peach of an inswinger pitching outside off stump and removing the set batsman's middle and leg stumps. The Eye players had their tails up as they believed they had seen off Worly's most dangerous batsmen but their hopes soon turned sour as the in-form Harry W blasted an 80-run partnership with John in just 10 overs. John bought up his second 50 for Worly 2nds of the season with a classy lofted shot over mid-on for 6. Harry W was unlucky to not bring up his second fifty of the campaign, agonisingly, falling just two runs short of the milestone. The Worly numbers six through eleven added another 17 runs in three overs to bring up the team's first-ever 200-plus run score in the 30/30 era, finishing on 205 for 9. After a short break, the Worly fielders were back out on the pitch knowing Eye and District would need to pull off a mammoth chase at over 6.8 runs per over for victory. Harry N and Percy opened up for the hosts with the former being removed from the attack to let the strike bowlers of Percy and Will take over proceedings. It was a perfect partnership from the Worly pace merchants. With Percy providing deadly accurate in and away swing on command from the Simon Rodwell end, he was superbly supported by Will from the Pavillion end who was letting the ball do the talking, nibbling the ball away from the batsmen with seam movement and bringing it back it to the Eye batsmen to disturb the timber. A masterclass of pace bowling from the young Worly attack had parallels to Harmison and Hoggard or Lillee and Thompson. Their combined figures of 10 overs for 20 runs taking 7 wickets and 2 maidens had practicaly ended the match as a competition. Skipper Sam introduced Alfie and Gino to seal the game with the former creating real pressure only allowing the Eye batsmen to scramble two runs from his three overs. Eventually the resistance ended, the Eye wicketkeeper unable to keep a flighted off-break delivery from Gino out, the ball crashing into leg stump to seal the game for Worly and get their account underway for the 2022 season. An excellent all-round performance from the boys with everyone contributing with bat or ball - specialmention to John, Harry W, Percy, Will and to Arthur keeping things very tidy behind the stumps in his debut game with the gloves.
