Worlingworth Cricket Club 1st XI v West Bergholt on Sat 01 May 2021 at 1pm
Worlingworth Cricket Club Lost by 95 runs
Match report
After the recent spell of dry, sunny weather, Worly's first game of the season was played in cold, drizzly conditions with heavy showers and even a hailstorm during the 2nd innings. Dan in his first game as captain won the toss and inserted the visitors. Rodders started as normal with a wicket - bowled through the gate - and would have had a rapid second had Rob hung-on to a catch at mid-on. A costly drop as the batsmen went on to make 96. Although wickets were proving elusive, the scoring rate was relatively slow with West Bergholt passing 100 in the 27th over; however, the batsmen accelerated after drinks and a score of over 250 was soon on the cards. Late wickets gave a little hope but a total of 233 was going to be a very difficult target. Overall, for a first game on a cold afternoon, the bowlers did well and, apart from the odd lapse, the fielders supported the bowlers. Unfortunately, the chase never really got going against some accurate bowling and a couple of excellent catches meant that the Worly batsmen were soon targetting batting points rather than victory. Lusty hitting by DK had briefly given hope but his wicket and the 3 that quickly followed saw the score at 48 for 6. With the light deteriorating, the visitors went to their slower bowlers which enabled Dan, Mark and Rob to give the score some respectability. A 95-run loss was disappointing but good to see Two Counties cricket back at Bedfield after 20 months when ironically West Bergholt were the visitors.
