3rd XI v Coddenham - 21 August 2011

Match report:

Worlingworth won the toss and chose to bat, despite a cloudy muggy day that suggested the ball would turn. With Ben Gobbitt playing a wide drive and falling to a smart catch by Coddenham & Grundiburgh's keeper in the first over it didn't bode well! Bill Mugleston and Sam Chilvers that simply blocked and took two's for six overs to steady the ship before Sam started to play his strokes for a nice 27 as part of a 49 stand. Bill followed within a couple of overs for 18. Another stand of 45 between Martin Payne and mark Harding steadied the ship again, allowing Mark to accumulate runs on his way to a fine 91. A quick fire 13 from ewan Payne kept the momentum going before the innings closed on 196 for 7 and only the third time Worlingworth had batted out the overs.

The job was only half done and a good fielding effort was now required. As last week Harding, Payne and Chilvers kept the over rate down, with C&G only making 44 in the first 20 overs. This included six maidens from Mark Harding! Was there sufficient depth this week and who could step up - Eddie Smith bowled sufficiently well within the required rate with Payne and Chilvers backing up the other end with Sam Chilvers second spell picking up another two wickets - both catches behind the wickets from Ben Gobbitt - finishing with the pick of the figures 10-0-33-4. That left the last over - who could step up and you guessed correctly Jonny Hulkes who added a last ball stumping, by Ben Gobbitt, to close out the C&G innings for 183 - just 14 runs short.

A welcome win for Worlingworth and a great team effort - Worlingworth 19pts., Codd & Grundisburgh 8 pts.

3rd XI v Eye - 24 July 2011

Eye won the toss and elected to field under a sky of cloud/sun and a pitch that had had a lot of rain during the week. An unusual opening pair of Bill Mugleston and Martin Payne took to the field and put on a 50 partnership before Martin Payne fell (hit wicket) for a career best 24 in the 13th over. Dom Absolon made a quick 15, with Bill Mugleston falling for 27, before the innings was bolstered by Athul Sarangan with 68 not out and new boy, returning after 11 years, Nigel Woollatt chipping in with 18 not out at the end of the innings, to post a respectable 190.

An early wicket helped peg back the run chase, though a 57 partnership looked as though Eye would fight back, before debutant for the 3rds, Jonathan Woollatt broke the back of the innings with 5-0-38-3, to set up a close but fruitless finish for Eye, with Dom Absolon taking a C&B on the last ball to seal the win for Worlingworth by 4 runs!

3rd's v Stradbroke - 10 July 2011

Having won the toss and made the wrong decision last week , amends were made but the same result - inviting the opposition to bat. However, a good decision this week but it was always going to be a race against the weather. Stradbroke made a quick start but edges were flying past the fielders and when they did fall to hand catches were dropped (five in the innings). Sam Chilvers was getting some vicious lift but nothing for it. Dan Payne made the break through in the 4th over - on his way to 7-0-27-4. The change of bowling brought results including a caught and bowled for Martin Payne (especially pleasing having dropped a similar catch earlier) but the best figures went to Graham Mobbs - 5.4-0-19-4, the final wicket as the first drops of rain began to fall. The covers were on and an early tea taken, but the precautions were in vain as the heavens opened and flooded the strips either side of the cover, making play impossible. After 45 mins of rain and a quick inspection - hands shaken and goodbyes said. Match Abandoned at tea, following Stradbroke innings - weather won by at least an inch of water on the strip!!

3rd's v Nacton - 3 July 2011

Under cloudy skies, a wicket with lots of green grass suggested a bowling strip. Winning the toss, deciding to try this out and put Nacton into bat, it became apparent this was a big mistake. Both openers, after a cautious opening four overs, got into their stride and built a firm foundation, including a 115 for Dyson, before trying one that fell short to a smart catch by Dom Absolon. Only three wickets, despite trying six bowlers, to make the toil in the field worth-while. Nacton amassed a big score of 276 for 3, with all the batsmen getting into double figures, including a retiree with a pulled calf muscle!

Could it get worse? Unfortunately Yes! At 11 for 5, phone calls were being made for early pick ups and questions about whether the pubs would be open at such an early hour. However, after last weeks innings, Sam Gibbs was pushed up the innings to bat with Dan Payne, who between them turned the innings from a joke to somewhere near respectability sharing a 92 partnership – Sam collecting 35 and Dan 63. The only other batsman in double figures was Eddie Smith with 16.

Looking at the positives, despite losing by 120 runs, was an innings of 40 overs without being all out and collecting a third batting point for only the second time this year. Nacton 19 pts., Worlingworth 4 pts.

3rd's v Stradbroke - 26 June 2011

No doubts, with a sultry afternoon sun, about what to do - win the toss and choose to bat!! For one it went to plan and having won the toss, chose to put Stradbroke in the field. Having recovered from the nasty blow between the eyes last week, Bill Mugleston opened the batting, with Ben Gobbitt, and again gave a good account of themselves, getting to 29, before Ben was bowled for (17). Bill followed ten runs later for the same score. Following a first ball duck for Ewan Payne, Worlingworth's latest find, Mark Harding, joined the captain Martin Payne, needing to steady the ship - ten overs and 37 runs later with a decision to try and push the rate Mark chipped one to mid off for a first innings score of 10. Two follows one, and a dodgy lbw (well he would say that) saw Martin go for 15. The heat got to the tail and with the exception of Sam Gibbs (19) no-one of the last six wickets got to 3 or above - 115 all out.

The sages amongst the team suggested this was 20/5 runs short of a good target but early wickets might put the pressure back on Stradbroke? A good opening partnership put on 41 and it didn't look good. However, wickets were taken including a first over début for Mark Harding of a two wicket maiden. Could it be done? It was tight but opening bat, O Bickley, for Stradbroke held it together, and despite four ducks saw Strabroke home in the 30th over to win by three wickets. Pick of the bowlers, debutant, Mark Harding 9-4-30-3. Catches for Gibbs, Harding and Smith.

3rd's v Felixstowe Corinthians - 19 June 2011

Agreement had been reached for Felixstowe to bat first, due to a makeshift third XI team but were delayed due to a car breakdown. The rain held off and we got under way. Variety was the key with nine bowlers eventually used in an attempt to restrict Corinthians batting - wickets claimed by Andy and Ben Herriot, the later's first ever for the 3rd XI and three excellent catches by Ollie Chidwick (2) and a monster collected from the heavens by Ben Gobbitt. A good account given and a score of 183 was nothing to be ashamed of.

Following a delay for rain, play got underway and Ben Gobbitt set about scoring runs, but eventually swinging to one to many for 25. Following a first ball duck for Nathan Jest (played on) the ship was steadied for a few overs but few runs were scored - the next five wickets falling for single figure scores. This included a significant delay for a head injury to Bill Mugleston, who continued on to make a stubborn 32, which on any other day would have been higher if not for a sodden ball and outfield. Sam Gibbs then went for glory finishing on 17 not out ably supported by Ben Herriot, who eventually fell to close the innings and game on 108.

Worlingworth lost by 76 runs - but picked up five points.

3rd's v Coddenham - 29 May 2011

Under a cloudy sky the first toss of the year was won (!), and with the advice of the groundsman ringing in my ears, the decision was to bat. With little recognised batting there were no volunteers to open and so the captain stepped into the breech. A steady start scoring at between 2 and 3 an over was then interrupted when the first change of bowling brought its first wicket, Geoff Robinson out for 13. A couple of overs later and Martin Payne gets a banana ball and is out for 15. A middle order collapse is stalled briefly with Roger Gobbitt (20) and Ewan Payne (15) steadying the innings before Codd & Grundisburgh's, Tom Collins, collects his 4th wicket and the tail quickly follows to leave Worlingworth on 94 all out.

Quick wickets are required and a excellent run out, from a miss field, by Ewan Payne/Ben Gobbitt brings the first wicket. Wickets fall and at 29-5 there is hope. However, it is clear that Codd & Grunds. were simply' blooding' a few youngsters as the elder statesmen of the side come in after drinks and with 8 off the first over, and no recognised bowlers remaining begin to pick of the runs reaching the target with a four to finish the innings in the 31st over and a four wicket victory.

Worlingworth 4 pts., Codd & Grundisburgh 18pts.

As a short post script, many thanks to the travelling ladies of Codd & Grundisburgh, who kindly washed up after tea.

3rd XI suffer 10 wkt reverse at Felixstowe

A gloriously sunny but windy day by the sea in Felixstowe, saw another toss lost (yet to win the toss this season) and we were put into bat. Requiring an 'old head' to accompany a pretty youthful side, Bill Mugglestone opened the batting, in the hope we could better last weeks very disappointing 57 all out. Solid defence and patience saw the first five overs out. 32 off ten overs bode well but a steady rattling of timber saw Worlingworth reduced to 84 all out - just a single batting point as consolation. Top scoring Alex Dunham, 17, followed by Bill's 14 and a 'last stand' 14 from Sam Gibbs. Unfortunately, no-one else got into double figures and we had taken just 23 of the 40 overs. The abrupt innings caught our hosts tea lady off guard so tea was delayed for ten overs.

Good fielding was required as Felixstowe started their innings and was delivered with just 9 off the first five overs. Hope was still there at ten overs but it was not to be. Having enjoyed a lovely tea the Felixstowe openers played their strokes and accelerated away knocking off the final runs in the 18th over and an unbroken opening pair secured twenty points for our hosts.

3rd XI earn opening day victory

Mid April always seems a very dubious time to start a season in terms of expecting good weather but what a day - bright sunshine all day, even if the wind took the heat out of the day after tea. A mixed line up - possibly nine of which could claim to be able to 'turn' their arm - took the field having been put into the field by DBSL who won the toss. After a few overs where DBSL scored freely, the brakes were applied as the bowlers shook off the winter and found their line and length. The honours of the first wicket of the season fell to Geoff Robinson, the opening bowlers having missed out on wickets.  Most catches were held but tired fielding in the last five overs allowed DBSL to reach 172.  We appeared to be in the game.  Best figures for Geoff Robinson 9-3-17-3, but a good team performance.

The innings couldn't have got off to a worse start, losing a wicket in the first over, without registering a run! Sam Chilvers came to the crease and along with Dan Snell steadied the ship to reach 30, before the later allowed one through to be clean bowled. The next partnership of Sangaran and Chilvers put on 128 to steer us to a sight of victory before Athul went for glory and was bowled for 64. Geoff knocked off the winning runs to leave Sam Chilvers on a well deserved  68 not out.

Worlingworth 3rds win the first game of the season by 7 wickets and collects its first 20 points of the season.

Cricketforce 2011

A beautiful spring day for Worlingworth's second annual Cricket force day.  As with any club there are always a mass of tasks that need undertaking to keep a club going and we are no different.  Beyond the obvious cleaning of the clubhouse, particularly the shower rooms other work included the kitchen, toilets including hanging various ironmongery.  Internal painting - why bother with the away team? a common question (remember fair play boys and girls) - and a major task of painting the relocated container, with special thanks to Rob Nesling for moving it. All the time grounds works continued with our newly trained groundsmen - Chris and Bill (can we have a tinge of green for the seam bowlers please?!).  Various bits of gardening, general site clearance (another skip filled) and installations. All in all a successful day and many thanks to all who attended.
