06.09.103rd XI suffer end of season defeat
The final 3rd XI game beckoned and began with a good omen - winning the toss and, of course, choosing to bat! A very tidy spell of bowling from Coddenham & Grundisburgh left Worlingworth crawling to 12 off the first seven overs and typified in the 8th over with Dan Snell going for a duck! 50 was then put on by Dave Courteen (30) and Graham Mobbs (40), before the former became the first of three superb catches. Graham kept his end whilst wickets tumbled, the best a 16 from Ben Gobbitt. The final over of the innings two golden ducks and duck summing up the innings (five in total) - all out for 137.
Therefore no surprise that C&G knocked off the runs with little effort including two fifties - with wickets for Graham Mobbs and James Bensly the only highlights. So melancholy sets in for another season past - a number of fine moments to remember throughout the season and we improved significantly over the previous year - more importantly no wooden spoon this year!!!
23.08.103rd XI back to winning ways
Under cloudy sun the toss was lost and Worlingworth were asked to bat! A bit of a surprise but dutifully we padded up with high hopes. Due to forgetting we are now on 1pm starts, the opening pair had an unusual line up - Graham Mobbs and Dan Snell. Taking advantage of some very generous bowling, adding 36 extras in the innings, the scored fairly motored along (for the thirds) with 48 off the first ten, with Dan Snell falling along the way for a fairly rapid 24. Twenty overs brought up 91. A fine partnership between Athul Sarangan (48) and Geoff Robinson (27) laid a solid innings whose hard work appeared to be undermined by a batting collapse of three ducks, including a golden for the captain (now you know why he bats No 10), and saw the innings close on 159.
Tea was enjoyed but most viewed the score at least 15 runs short of a winnable score. But a new opening bowling pair saw Kesgrave restricted to 25 off ten, for two wickets, including one in the very first over. This was to be the first of five for Dan Payne, finishing with figures of 5-2-20-5. Twenty overs bringing up 79 for 5 - this the start of some stubborn resistance, a partnership of 49, giving cause for concern and that such a good start would be wasted. Following an injury to Graham Mobbs, James Bensly stepped up to add a valuable contribution of three wickets, 5.2-0-15-3 and helped guide Worlingworth to another win for the season, finishing with a fine left handed catch by man of the match Dan Payne.
16.08.103rd XI suffer 7 wkt defeat at Felixstowe Corinthians
Following a slight technical hitch, i.e. expecting two teenagers to talk to each other and agree a time/place for collection, the stand in captain for the toss was duly asked to bat (as half the team was still on the way to Felixstowe). A very damp pitch and windy very windy weather conditions was always going to be difficult and sure enough a very slow over rate - 14 off the first ten overs did not bode well. Twenty overs brought 37 runs with Bill Mugglestone on 20 before being caught. Athul Sangaran played an innings that had been coming for weeks (30) but the top score from Dan Payne (38 not out) adding valuable runs to the total - the innings closing on 126.
An opening maiden boded well, but a false dawn, with Corinthians scoring 44 off ten overs and 76 off twenty. Several bowlers were tried but all to no avail with Corinthians picking the final runs off the 36th over for a fairly easy win and recording a home and away win. for the season. 11.08.10Worlingworth C.C continues to evolve with exciting new developments
Worlingworth Cricket Club have recently completed two new developments with the installation of a new two lane net facility, and also of an Electronic Scoreboard at their ground in Bedfield.
The two developments which were partly funded with assistance from local county councillors Eddie Alcock and John McGregor as well as the Suffolk County Council Regeneration Fund, Mid Suffolk District Council and also Suffolk Environmental Trust continue the progress made by the club since the move to the new ground. With teams currently playing in the Suffolk Premier League, MSC Alliance Sections A and D, in the all 3 age groups in the North Suffolk Youth League, a programme of friendly matches , and a fledgling Ladies team the new facilities will be well used and it is hoped will enable more juniors to be coached at the regular training sessions.
10.08.10 Worlingworth Cricket Club - 100 clubAs you may know we have been running a Bonus Ball Draw at the Club for some time now. You may of course be a member! We have recently reviewed the effectiveness of the Draw and what we can raise from it for the Club and have consequently decided to start up a new replacement.
What is the 100 club? Essentially this is a club of up to 100 members (who don’t necessarily have to be members of the Cricket Club) who take part in a monthly draw for worthwhile cash prizes, at better odds than the lottery! They either pay to be members with an annual membership of £60 per year, or subscribe monthly at £5 per draw number through a standing order. The difference to the Bonus Ball draw is that there will be a monthly prize of £50 initially, which will increase to £100 a month once 25 members have been attracted to the draw. An additional £50 monthly prize will also be awarded once we have reached 50 members. All good?! Once we have 75 members, there will be additional prizes including for instance a Christmas bonus or a prize for a special occasion. Although these are obviously higher amounts of money to pay out to winners, we still hope to raise up to £4000 a year for the Cricket Club from the new draw – very valuable funds. Initially we hope to put the money raised towards an improved playing surface to the new net cages being constructed. Due to a cut back in grant funding, the bid that four of our Under 13’s had prepared and presented to the County Council Youth Opportunities Fund for just this use, was cancelled disappointingly, so we are keen to see their hard work in trying for the money rewarded.
If you are a member of the existing/old Bonus Ball draw then July 17th will be the last draw that you take part in. The old scheme will be stopping from this date to be replaced by the new 100 Club. Members who have paid their subscription up to January 15th 2011 are receiving with this letter a refund of the August to January payments. It is hoped that all existing Bonus Ball draw members will be keen to join the new scheme to benefit from the bigger prizes.
08.08.103rd XI narrowly defeated by league leaders Stowupland
Another week and with all the rain another green track to ponder whether the cliché stands - win the toss and choose to bat. Well Worlingworth considered it briefly and chose to bat. A reasonable start, the first wicket not going down until the 13th over but only 34 runs on the board. Whether it was the pitch or just slow batting but the run rate never got going after Dan Snell (22 ) pushed the run rate along. Geoff Robinson anchored the innings again with a very patient 55. Worlingworth finishing with 146.
Despite two quick wickets Stowupland were never behind the run rate. The last ten overs of the innings quite tense as wickets fell, Athul Sangaran (7-1-31-3) the pick of the bowling, supported by Dan Payne (10.5-1-25-2). As usual not enough runs on the board to defend, with Stowupland knocking the final runs off in the 36th over.
26.07.103rd XI defeated by local rivals Eye in friendly
Following the tradition set at Bedfield Rd. the toss was offered by Eye and the decision to bat an easy one, given the hot and humid conditions. A reasonable start, scoring at 3 an over seemed to bode well but the run rate didn't really climb from there. Geoff Robinson top scoring with 48, supported by Bill Mugglestone (35) and James Bensly (21). Some lovely shots were shown from the returning Simon Crossland (19) and Athul Sangaran (10) but the surprise of the day was a 11 from Jonny Hulkes including his first four of the season, producing a smile as wide as the crease. Worlingworth's total, a respectable 174.
Eye got off to a good start despite losing a wicket in the first over to a cracking throw from Athul, to run out the opener, who failed to return to his ground. But the chase was always under control. Eight bowlers, as per the friendly rules, were tried with James leading the figures, 4 overs for 6, with Geoff, Simon, Sam and Jonny picking up wickets. But all to no avail with Eye knocking off the winning runs in the 35th over. 04.07.103rd XI triumph over Felixstowe
On a amazingly blue cloudless sky, losing the toss seemed the end of the world until Worlingworth were put into bat! So much for win the toss and choose to bat. A brave move to put last weeks 'ducks' together but what a difference a week makes. 43 for 0 after ten overs seemed a solid start, 95 after twenty was uncharted territory for the thirds, 149 after thirty was exceptional and needed a pinch for the captain and scorer. The middle order batsmen were grumbling about wearing pads and not getting a look in but eventually, with an opening stand of 186, Dave Courteen was caught from a smart catch for 80. Graham had already overtaken him from a slow start and clearly needing a fag lost concentration at 101! Geoff (Robinson) sensing a few runs made a quick fire 32 and Ben (Gobbitt) got into the swing of things with 7 off 3 balls. A good total of 253 - maximum batting points for the first time this season (and probably many previous ones). However, one sensed, that with a lightening quick outfield it would still be hard work.
The opening five overs were not good with Felixstowe getting quickly to 26 off five overs, but then Worlingworth, finding line and length fought hard to get back in the game. By 15 overs Felixstowe were ahead again until the 25th when some tight fielding kept the score down. A couple of well timed wickets, including a superb run out off his own bowling by Athul Sangaran put the pressure back on and with the 6th wicket falling in the 39th over a tense game came to an end with 18 needed off the final over. Once more a very tidy over, by Geoff Robinson, took Worlingworth over the winners line. 27.06.10Under the blazing sun of the hottest day of the year the old adage of "Win the Toss and Choose to Bat" was never more true and a very popular decision amongst the Wolingworth team! The batting line up looked pretty good and a quick start (for the thirds) augered well - scoring at four an over with a little help fromthe extras. Unfortunately two ducks from the top four suggested the confidence was ill placed. However, Dom Absolon made a tidy 24 (breaking in a new bat) and Bill Mugglestone's experience showed, top scoring with 25.
But once again, despite useful runs from Dan Payne (17) and Geoff Robinson, batting well down at No. 6 (14) it was not enough to give the bowlers much of a chance - just 127 to defend. Variety was the order of the day, with seven bowlers tried and Geoff Robinson leading the figures with 4-22 off his ten overs. But all to no avail - Felixstowe Corinthians knocking off the final runs in the 35th over to win by 4 wickets.
08.06.10Worlingworth Ladies played the Felixstowe Ladies on Sunday morning, and were narrowly defeated, by just 1 run in the 20/20 match! The game went its full distance, down to the last ball. Becky Saunders and Sarah Payne both retired at 25 no. Ellie Johnson bowled excellently claiming 1 wicket for 9 runs. Upcoming girls from the Eye/Worlingworth Sunday morning training added greatly to the game, something we hope to keep building on in the future.

07.06.103rd XI triumph for first time this season, defeating Coddenham and Grundisburgh.
Surprisingly we were put into bat, but older hands in the team suggested a slow cautious start was the best option (cheers Bill) and sure enough 25 runs off the first 15 overs for one (an unusual failure with the bat by Geoff) would normally lead to a big loss. Bill then steadied the innings, whilst scoring a patient 18, and put on 26 with James Bensly. James then went on to score 55 in only his second game for the team. Contributions were also made by Ben Gobbitt (27) and Chris Miles (17) to finish the innings on 148. Not a high score but something to play to.
Once again a solid fielding display saw fantastic figures from Geoff of 6-4-3-4wkts, two wickets for Dan and Martin Payne and even another wicket from Ewan Payne. Coddenham & Grundisburgh also showed great sportsmanship with no. 3 walking even though both umpires were unsure. So all in all A FIRST WIN for the year! A great team effort all round. 27.04.103rd XI narrowly defeated in 2010 season opener.
Having been beaten by 21 runs it is still possible to be positive. Having put Kesgrave into bat, Worlingworth managed to bowl them out in the 38th over, for 172, with Geoff Robinson and Graham Mobbs finishing with four wickets apiece. Graham then lead the batting reply with a fine 51 supported by Geoff and a quick fire innings from new coach coach Stuart (22 n.o.) to reach 150 all out. Hoping for a even more positive second game on the 2nd May!

Still a few behind the 10,000 accumulated by Mr Watson however...
21.09.09An excellent 104 from the departing Rob Von Elling was in vain as the 1st XI fell to a plucky defeat to Thurston in the SPL Cup Final at Easton. A combination of tight bowling and a slow pitch, made runs hard to come by. A patient 23 from Sam Chilvers gave Von Elling the ideal support as the pair put on 109 for the 4th wicket. After Von Elling departed, Worlingworth crept up to 166-8. It took 38 overs for Thurston to pass the required target, and they were made to battle all the way, although ultimately, the number of extras conceded, and the lack of an additional 30 runs enabled Thurston to take the honours.
